Conan O'Brien Takes a Dig at Trump Administration with 'Powerful Russian' Joke at Oscars

Hollywood's biggest night—the Oscars—was filled with glitz, glamour, and emotional speeches, but it largely remained free of political statements. However, a sharp quip from host Conan O'Brien brought the Ukraine-Russia conflict into the spotlight just days after a heated exchange between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

O'Brien, hosting the prestigious ceremony for the first time, made a veiled reference to the Trump administration while celebrating the success of Anora, which won five awards, including Best Picture. The film, a gripping tale of a Brooklyn sex worker battling her wealthy Russian in-laws, inspired O'Brien’s pointed remark.

"Anora is having a great night… That’s great news," O’Brien said, before adding, "I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian."

The joke drew resounding applause from the audience, reflecting the ongoing tensions surrounding the Ukraine-Russia war and recent U.S. foreign policy moves.

Backdrop: Trump-Zelensky Clash

O'Brien’s remark came on the heels of a contentious meeting between Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last Friday. The discussion, initially focused on military assistance and security guarantees, escalated into an extraordinary on-camera confrontation.

During the exchange, Trump and Vance accused Zelensky of being ungrateful for U.S. military support, while Zelensky pushed for stronger security assurances from Washington. The meeting followed a phone call last month between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, after which Trump unexpectedly announced upcoming negotiations to end the war—leaving European allies and Zelensky blindsided.

Russia Reacts, Europe Responds

The fallout from Friday’s clash has been significant. Russia openly celebrated the disagreement, praising Trump’s shift in U.S. policy while condemning Zelensky for challenging the former president’s stance. Meanwhile, European leaders have rallied behind the Ukrainian leader, reinforcing their commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.

Since launching its full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has seized approximately 113,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, while Ukraine has made some gains, including a 450-square-kilometer incursion into Russia’s Kursk province, according to open-source war maps and Russian assessments.

The Oscars: Politics and Entertainment Intersect

While the Academy Awards are traditionally a night of celebration, O'Brien's joke highlighted how global politics inevitably intersect with entertainment. As the war in Ukraine continues and U.S. foreign policy remains under scrutiny, moments like these serve as a reminder that Hollywood is not immune to the world’s biggest issues.
