February 5, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump's recent comments on the Gaza Strip have sparked outrage in India, with the Congress Party condemning his statement as “bizarre, dangerous, and totally unacceptable.” The opposition party has also urged the Narendra Modi government to clarify its stance on the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

Trump's Controversial Gaza Proposal

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday, Trump declared that the U.S. would “take over” the Gaza Strip, “own it,” and initiate economic development aimed at providing job opportunities and housing. He also suggested that the U.S. would be responsible for dismantling explosives and rebuilding the area.

Trump's remarks came during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he elaborated on plans to transform the war-torn region into a hub of economic activity.

Congress Demands Clarity from the Modi Government

Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications, Jairam Ramesh, sharply criticized Trump's proposal. Ramesh emphasized that the only sustainable solution for peace in the Middle East was a two-state arrangement that would grant the Palestinian people independence and dignity while ensuring Israel's security.

Ramesh also called for the Indian government's position on the issue to be made clear, as several other countries have already stated their views on the matter.

Trump’s Proposal for Palestinian Displacement

Trump suggested that the 2 million Palestinians currently residing in Gaza should be relocated to other countries in the Middle East. He described Gaza as a “demolition site” and claimed that Palestinians would be better off settling in safer, developed areas instead of returning to the region.

Trump added that the U.S. would undertake large-scale reconstruction and economic development in Gaza, but provided no details on who would be permitted to live there.

Potential U.S. Military Involvement

When asked about the possibility of sending U.S. troops to Gaza, Trump stated that the U.S. would “do what is necessary” to ensure the success of his plans, even suggesting that he might personally visit the area.
