Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk during his visit to the United States, where he also held discussions with President Donald Trump. The meeting between Modi and Musk has drawn attention due to Musk’s longstanding interest in expanding his business operations in India.

During their interaction, the two leaders explored various topics, including advancements in space exploration, technology, artificial intelligence, and sustainable energy solutions. The conversation is seen as a continuation of Musk’s efforts to establish a stronger presence in India, particularly in the electric vehicle and satellite internet sectors.

1. Starlink’s Entry into India

One of Musk’s primary interests has been launching Starlink, his satellite-based internet service, in India. While Starlink has the potential to provide high-speed internet in remote regions, regulatory roadblocks and concerns over security compliance have slowed its entry into the country.

India’s telecom sector has been cautious about allowing foreign satellite internet providers, with major players like Reliance Jio expressing opposition. However, recent changes in government policy regarding satellite spectrum allocation may offer Starlink an opportunity to establish operations in India. Given that a significant portion of India’s population still lacks reliable internet access, Musk sees India as a key market for his broadband services.

2. Tesla’s Plans for the Indian Market

Tesla’s entry into India has been in discussion for several years, but high import duties on electric vehicles have remained a major obstacle. Although India is a major automobile market, electric vehicle sales are still in the early stages, making up only a small percentage of total car sales.

The Indian government has been pushing for an increase in EV adoption, aiming for 30% of all vehicles to be electric by 2030. A recent policy change offering reduced tariffs on imported EVs—provided manufacturers commit to setting up local production—has made India a more attractive destination for Tesla. The company is currently exploring possible locations to set up manufacturing facilities.

3. Expanding Collaboration in Technology and Space

Apart from Tesla and Starlink, Modi and Musk also discussed strengthening technological cooperation between India and the United States. The focus was on artificial intelligence, space exploration, and innovation in sustainable energy.

Musk has previously spoken highly of India’s potential in these areas, and with increasing collaboration between Indian and American companies, investments in these sectors could grow significantly in the coming years.

As Musk continues to express interest in India, his companies are expected to play a greater role in shaping the country’s technology and infrastructure landscape.
