London/New Delhi — A video of fugitive businessmen Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya singing Frank Sinatra’s “I Did It My Way” at a high-profile party in London has gone viral, and ignited public anger in India.
Both men, wanted in India on serious financial charges, were seen enjoying themselves at a lavish event attended by over 300 guests, including cricket star Chris Gayle. The clip shows them on stage, smiling and singing, far removed from the courtrooms and legal cases that await them at home.
Lalit Modi, the former IPL commissioner, faces money laundering and FEMA violations and remains banned by India’s cricket board. Vijay Mallya, once dubbed the “King of Good Times,” owes Indian banks nearly ₹8,000 crore and is accused of financial fraud linked to the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.
Public reaction has been swift and furious. Many see the video not just as a display of arrogance, but as a painful reminder of India’s long struggle to hold powerful economic offenders accountable. With Indian authorities still pursuing extradition and recovery efforts, their open display of privilege has only deepened resentment.
“This isn’t regret. It’s not justice. It’s a celebration of impunity,” said one social media user, reflecting the mood online.
