Elon Musk has turned sharply against former President Donald Trump’s flagship spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and urging voters to pressure lawmakers into rejecting it.
In a series of posts on X, Musk accused Republican lawmakers of betraying the American public by supporting the legislation, which includes sweeping tax cuts and increased defense spending. “Bankrupting America is not OK! KILL the BILL,” he wrote.
Musk’s comments come just days after leaving a short-term advisory role in the Trump administration. His criticism threatens to splinter Republican unity in the Senate, where Trump needs near-total support to pass the bill.
The legislation also includes a $4 trillion increase to the U.S. debt limit, a crucial element Treasury officials say must be passed by August to avoid default.
White House officials downplayed Musk’s opposition, citing cuts to green energy subsidies and tensions over withdrawn appointments as possible reasons. Still, Musk’s influence looms large, particularly among fiscal conservatives like Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, who are already voicing resistance.
With a slim Senate margin, Musk’s vocal opposition could prove a significant obstacle to Trump's legislative ambitions.
