South Africa’s quest for ICC glory began with an emphatic statement as they outclassed Afghanistan by 107 runs in their opening Champions Trophy 2025 match in Karachi. Ryan Rickelton’s maiden century, combined with a lethal pace attack, ensured the Proteas walked away with a comprehensive victory.

Batting Brilliance: Rickelton Leads the Charge

Put into bat first, South Africa showcased their batting depth, amassing 315/6 in 50 overs. The highlight of the innings was Ryan Rickelton’s sublime 103 off 106 balls, featuring a blend of elegant strokes and confident footwork. He shared a crucial 129-run stand with skipper Temba Bavuma (58 off 76) before teaming up with Rassie van der Dussen (52 off 46).

Although South Africa faced a dry spell of seven overs without a boundary, they regained momentum thanks to Aiden Markram’s explosive unbeaten 52 off just 36 balls, ensuring a competitive total.

Afghanistan’s Chase Falls Apart

Facing a daunting target, Afghanistan faltered early, losing four wickets within the first 15 oversKagiso Rabada (3/36) and Lungi Ngidi (2/56) ripped through the top order, preventing Afghanistan from gaining any momentum. Rahmat Shah (90 off 92 balls) put up a brave fight, but he lacked support as wickets kept tumbling.

The match all but ended when Rabada dismissed Rahmat in the 43rd over, sealing South Africa’s dominant win.

Turning Points

Early Wickets: Rabada and Ngidi ensured Afghanistan never settled into their chase.
Rickelton’s Run-Out: Despite his flawless knock, his dismissal in the 36th over was a big moment.
Markram’s Quick-Fire Knock: His 52* off 36 balls gave South Africa a late boost.

South Africa’s ICC Dream: Can They Finally Lift the Trophy?

Despite winning the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998, South Africa has struggled in ICC tournaments under the league format. After falling short in last year’s T20 World Cup final, the Proteas are determined to break their knockout curse this time.

Their commanding victory against Afghanistan is a promising start—but can they maintain the momentum?
