Mumbai — Global electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom, located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The opening marks a significant milestone for the U.S.-based automaker, which has long hinted at plans to expand into India.
The 4,000-square-foot Tesla Experience Centre features the company’s all-electric SUV, the Model Y, which is being introduced in two variants: Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD. The launch is seen as Tesla’s strategic first step toward testing India’s market potential while continuing discussions on local manufacturing.

“Tesla’s India entry is symbolic of shifting EV dynamics in the region,” an industry expert noted. “It opens up a new premium segment for Indian buyers who want performance, tech, and sustainability in one package.”
Pricing & Duties
Tesla’s Model Y starts at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), largely inflated due to India’s import duty structure on fully built units (CBUs), which ranges between 70% and 100%.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has openly criticized these high tariffs, urging for lower import taxes to make EVs more accessible. However, the Indian government maintains its push for local manufacturing commitments before granting concessions, a point yet to be resolved.
What’s Next?
While Tesla hasn’t confirmed any plans for a production or assembly facility in India, reports suggest future experience centres are being considered in New Delhi and other metros. The current launch is being closely watched by both EV competitors and policy makers for signs of how the Indian consumer will respond to Tesla’s presence.
