Early Life and Career Beginnings

Frances Harder’s journey in the world of fashion began in North England, which at the time was the centre for textiles where her upbringing was steeped in a rich culture of creativity and artistry. As a young girl, she was captivated by the transformative power of design, dreaming of one day making her mark on the industry. This passion led her to pursue a degree in fashion at Salford University, a decision that would lay the foundation for a lifelong career at the intersection of creativity and business.

Upon graduation, Frances worked in various design roles before transitioning into education. Her first teaching role at her alma mater in the UK provided her with invaluable insights into how education could be a platform to shape future generations of designers. After a four year stint working as a technical designer on Air Bus and meeting her husband in Munich they both took a year off to travel the World and married in Cylon. They then moved to the United States, and she joined the faculty at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), where she could stay connected to the ever-evolving fashion industry while mentoring the next wave of creative talent.

During this time, Frances also launched her own design ventures. Collaborating with a Japanese clothing manufacturer to create a line under her own name offered her a firsthand view of the global fashion landscape. While these ventures brought moments of success, they also came with significant challenges. The failure of the Japanese Yen ended her business partnership but became a pivotal learning experience, shaping her philosophy on the importance of combining creative passion with strong business acumen. Plus, learn the importance of understanding global cultures.

Later, her tenure at Otis College of Art and Design became a defining chapter of her career. For nearly a decade, she mentored countless students, sharing her industry expertise while encouraging them to embrace their unique artistic voices. These experiences deepened her commitment to education, inspiring her to find innovative ways to empower others within the industry. While teaching at Otis new design opportunities were offered. From designing for the Royal House of Brunei to designing two lines for Presila Prestly that was sold on Home Shopping channel.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Setbacks

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Setbacks

Throughout her career, Frances has faced challenges that tested her resilience. The closure of her clothing businesses, while initially disheartening, served as a critical turning point. She learned that understanding business models, international trade, production workflows, and market demands is just as essential as creativity in the fashion industry. These lessons later became central to her work as a mentor and author.

Balancing her professional roles with her responsibilities as a mother also posed unique challenges. Frances’s ability to manage her time effectively allowed her to thrive both at home and in her career. This juggling act taught her the value of prioritisation and adaptability, qualities she now passes on to her students and mentees.

More recently, after the closure of the Fashion Business Incorporated (FBI) she has been working for the United Nations to assist third world countries to sell into the USA. From Peru, (alpaca), to Nepal (cashmere) and more recently Egypt (cotton) she consulted companies on how best to work successfully with US companies.  She has also served in a number of very important legal disputes as an industry expert. Serving to testify as an expert in Patent infringements, copyright infringements and other industry disputes. Staying updated with technological advancements, and adapting to the changing needs of the rapidly changing industry. Yet, her determination to innovate and her passion for education have enabled her to navigate these hurdles successfully.
