Spain and Portugal secured their places in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after overcoming Austria and Croatia respectively in two entertaining knockout fixtures on Wednesday, setting up an all-Iberian clash that promises to be one of the standout matches of the tournament.

Spain produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat Austria 3-0 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Mikel Oyarzabal starred with two goals, while defender Pedro Porro added another as the 2010 world champions controlled the match from start to finish.

Oyarzabal opened the scoring early, giving Spain confidence and allowing them to dominate possession throughout the contest. Pedro Porro doubled the advantage with a well-timed header before Oyarzabal sealed the victory with his second goal, ensuring Spain progressed comfortably into the next round.

Austria struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against Spain's disciplined defence and midfield control. Despite moments of attacking intent, they were unable to break through the Spanish backline, ending their World Cup campaign.

Portugal, meanwhile, faced a much sterner challenge against Croatia in Toronto. The encounter remained evenly balanced for long periods before substitute Gonçalo Ramos delivered the decisive moment deep into stoppage time.

With the match appearing destined for extra time, Ramos connected with a perfectly placed cross to guide a header into the net in the fourth minute of added time, handing Portugal a dramatic 2-1 victory.

Croatia responded immediately and believed they had forced an equaliser in the closing seconds. However, following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the goal was ruled out for offside, confirming Portugal's progression and ending Croatia's hopes of extending their World Cup journey.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, appearing in his historic sixth FIFA World Cup, played a key leadership role throughout the contest as his side showed resilience under pressure before finding the winning breakthrough in the closing moments.

The victories now set up one of the most anticipated fixtures of the knockout stage, with Spain and Portugal scheduled to meet in the Round of 16 next week. The match will feature two of Europe's strongest footballing nations, combining Spain's possession-based style with Portugal's attacking quality and tournament experience.

Spain enters the contest in impressive form after keeping a clean sheet and scoring three unanswered goals, while Portugal will take confidence from its ability to secure results under pressure. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the meeting is expected to be among the biggest attractions of the tournament.

As the FIFA World Cup knockout stage gathers momentum, both teams will look to build on their winning performances in pursuit of another world title, while fans around the world prepare for a blockbuster Iberian showdown that could define the next phase of the competition.
