The United States has seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman after a naval operation that involved warning fire and boarding by U.S. Marines, according to statements from President Donald Trump and U.S. Central Command. Trump said a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer intercepted the vessel, identified as the Touska, after it failed to comply with repeated warnings to stop. The ship was later disabled and taken into custody.
According to U.S. Central Command, the USS Spruance issued multiple warnings to the vessel over several hours. After the crew did not respond, the destroyer fired rounds targeting the ship’s engine room, effectively disabling it. The crew had been warned to evacuate the area before the strike.
Following the operation, U.S. Marines boarded the vessel and secured control. Trump stated that the Touska had previously been under U.S. Treasury sanctions due to alleged involvement in illegal activities.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. The United States has been enforcing a naval blockade on ships entering and exiting Iranian ports in recent days.
Earlier on Sunday, Iran reportedly fired on commercial vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating concerns over the security of one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
The seizure of the vessel marks a significant escalation in the ongoing standoff between the two countries. Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions appear uncertain, with reports indicating that planned talks between U.S. and Iranian representatives may not proceed as scheduled.
President Trump warned that further action could follow if Iran does not agree to U.S. terms aimed at resolving the conflict.
The situation remains fluid, with global markets and international observers closely monitoring developments in the region.
